But things weren’t always easy between the mother and daughter. Carrie struggled with drug addiction as a teenager, causing heartbreak for Burnett.

“My daughter Carrie got into drugs. In that situation, don’t be their best friend,” Burnett told AARP in 2020. “When we got her into a third rehab, oh, she hated my guts! You have to love them enough to let them hate you.”

“I thought … was there something I should have seen, something I should have known, something I would have spotted? You know, what did I miss? Was I not strong enough?” she told ABC News in 2002.

But Burnett told AARP that her daughter got sober by the time she was 18, and the two became closer than ever and “had a good 20 years” where they were “joined at the hip.”

Carrie’s career took off and her relationship with her mom was never better… until a personal tragedy struck: In 2001, Carrie was diagnosed with lung cancer that later spread to her brain.

But just like her mom, Carrie had a strong sense of humor which she used to get through the battle: “Carrie had a spirit about her, all through her treatments,” Burnett told ABC News.

Burnett was also moved by her daughter’s mantra: “In the hospital she said, ‘Every day I wake up and decide, today I’m going to love my life.’ And that was her mantra.”

Carrie died in 2002, at the age of 38. Burnett was devastated by the untimely death of her beloved daughter, but ultimately found the strength to keep going.

“You don’t get over it, but you cope,” she told People in 2018. “What else can you do? When Carrie died, I didn’t want to get out of bed for a while, but I had a play to finish that we started that Hal Prince was going to direct. I owed it to Carrie, and I owed it to Hal.”

‘Still with me’ 21 years later

In a new interview ahead of Burnett’s 90th birthday, she opened up about her daughter’s death over 20 years later, and says she still thinks about Carrie every day.

“There’s not a day or almost a moment goes by that she’s not with me,” Burnett told People Magazine this month. “We worked together, we laughed together, we cried together. She was a force.”

She says her daughter’s strong spirit during her sickness still serves as an inspiration to her.

“When she got sick, I remember she was in the hospital and I would go to see her every day,” Burnett recalled. “One day, a nurse at the hospital said, ‘Carrie cheers us up.’ I asked Carrie why she was always cheerful, and her reply was, ‘Everyday I wake up and decide.’ That’s the key word, decide.”

“I say that to myself every morning.”

After so many years, I don’t think there’s ever been a Rizzo as charming or easy to connect with as Stockard Channing.

Channing was a wonderful actor, and her singing in Grease was amazing. But now, at 80 years old, she looks very different, almost like a different person.

The first movie I ever saw Stockard Channing in was called “The Big Bus,” and I thought it was really funny. But back then, I never imagined she would have such an amazing career.

Today, Stockard Channing is most famous for playing Betty Rizzo in the movie “Grease,” which came out in 1978. It’s a popular American romantic comedy musical based on a stage musical from 1971. Many people agree that Channing did the best job of all the actresses who played Rizzo.

You might also know Channing from the TV show “The West Wing,” where she played Abbey Bartlet, the wife of the President. People loved her chemistry with Martin Sheen, who played the President.

“It just worked,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2020. “We had this chemistry right from the start. I’m not sure why, but it was there, and it never went away. It was a happy accident.”

Let’s dig deeper into the most important part of Stockard Channing’s career. Honestly, she hasn’t been in any big movies since “Grease,” even though she’s still acting in films and on Broadway.

Channing, who’s been nominated for 13 Emmy Awards and 7 Tony Awards, seems okay with being best known for playing the tough girl Rizzo in “Grease.”

But is that all there is to her story?

In 1973, she had a big role in a TV movie called “The Girl Most Likely to…,” which was a dark comedy about revenge. People were really into it at the time.

“A lot of folks talk about ‘Grease,’ but back then, just as many people would stop me on the street about that other movie. It was about revenge, and viewers at home would think, ‘Wow, someone gets me.’ It was a big hit,” she says.

“I used to be a bit grumpy about ‘Grease’ because I thought it was just for kids. But now, I think it’s pretty amazing. I’m really proud of it,” she told The Times in 2019.

Channing, who was born in Manhattan, was 33 when she played Rizzo, and playing a high schooler wasn’t easy for her.

“I was much older than Rizzo in real life, but I had to forget about that. I had to go back to how I felt when I was her age, or even younger. Dealing with all the complicated stuff teenagers go through, like hormones and figuring out who they are. Knowing I was older made Rizzo feel even more isolated,” Channing told Broadway World.

Channing always loved acting, so when she got the chance to play Rizzo, she was thrilled. Her performance made her really famous in the late 1970s. She even won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture Supporting Actress. But after “Grease,” it was hard for her to find the same success.

She tried to have her own TV shows, like “Stockard Channing in Just Friends” in 1979 and “The Stockard Channing Show” in 1980, but they didn’t do well, and her career slowed down.

Lots of folks know about Cher. When we talk about her, we often think of her rocky relationship with Sonny Bono. They had a kid together named Chaz Bono. Chaz, who was initially known as Chastity Bono, was born on March 4, 1969. Because his parents were famous, he became a well-known figure pretty quickly. It didn’t take much time for people to see him on TV.

Bono got his name from a movie called “Chastity,” which Sonny produced. In the movie, Cher played the main character, a young hippie runaway who was bisexual. Chastity Bono, their child, was conceived while they were making this film.

When Chaz was young, he often appeared on a TV show called “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour.” He would come on at the end of each episode when Sonny and Cher sang their famous song “I Got You Babe.” This made Chaz a familiar face to people watching the show.

It wasn’t until 2010 that Chaz officially became a man. A California court approved his request to change his gender and name.

In a documentary called “Becoming Chaz,” which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and aired on Oprah Winfrey Network, viewers got to see Chaz’s journey into becoming a man.

“My mother went through a kind of mourning period. It was difficult for her, and we didn’t see each other for about the first year of my transition,” Chaz explained to SBS Australia.

The documentary has lots of touching moments. One part shows Cher’s reaction after hearing Chaz’s new voice, changed by hormone drugs.

“I was really upset when I heard her voice on her answering machine. It was her old voice,” Cher said. “I remember asking, ‘Can we save it somehow?’ But it was gone. I won’t hear it again.”

After the documentary, Chaz started appearing in Hollywood more often. In 2011, he made history by being the first transgender man to be on “Dancing with the Stars.” This was also the first time a transgender man starred on a big TV show that wasn’t about being transgender, according to Advocate.com.

Five years later, Chaz appeared in five episodes of “American Horror Story: Roanoke” and played Reverend Rydale on “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

For a long time, Chaz struggled with being overweight and didn’t feel good in his body. But things started to change for the better when he began his gender transition.

“Years ago, when I talked to Oprah Winfrey, I said, ‘I wouldn’t have been able to do it before.’ I felt too disconnected from my body. The dysphoria I had about my body was too overwhelming for me to care enough to do anything like that,” Chaz explained.

When Chaz joined “Dancing With The Stars,” he weighed 250 pounds. But with all the practice and competition, he started losing weight quickly. That’s not surprising, given how much training and movement is needed to do well on the dance floor.

After the show ended, Chaz kept up his healthy lifestyle. He continued losing weight, and recent pictures show that he’s far from the unhealthy weight he was at 10 years ago.

Losing weight hasn’t been easy for Chaz. When you lose a lot of weight, sometimes your body can’t keep up, and you might end up with sagging skin.

“It’s not fun, but it was worth it because I look better now,” Chaz said. “I’ve cut out almost all grains from my diet. I mostly eat vegetables, meat, fruit, and nuts. On my birthday, I’ll have cake, though!” he told Extra TV.

”He did it all by himself. He made up his own mind and he did it. And it was like what — 85, 90 pounds. Wow! … I do not know if I’d have that courage.” Cher said in 2013.
